Second Life

Here is a link to a video about the Virtualis Convention Center in Second Life. And here is a link to a video about an actual meeting that was held there.

What do you think about virtual meetings?

  1. I think virtual meetings is a lot of fun and education is allowed with little to no expense in the traveling aspect of it. I would have to say that it's efficient. I would definitely use it if there was a choice between traveling to the location for the meeting or just using second life for it. This allows for more time in the office to finish work and more time at home with families.

  2. There's something that's still fun to me about traveling to a place for a meeting and seeing people face to face. Although, I have never actually been in a job situation where I had to travel for work, so I guess I wouldn't really know! I guess it also depends on where you're being sent! haha. I definitely agree with Zulay that it's practical in that there is little to no expense. The virtual meetings are interactive and entertaining. It's like playing a video game for work! I think it's a great idea. It's amazing what technology can do these days!

  3. Olivia I agree that there are some pros to physically traveling to places for meeting. It used to be inconvenient to some people to have meetings virtually because technology was not as advance as it is today. But being that technology have come this far Second Life have a very good alternative to traveling to another city or state for just a 2 hour meeting.

I'm wondering if attendees have to pay to attend meetings in Second Life? How does the person or company giving the meeting make money? If it's an internal meeting I see how this would save some money, but what if this is a educational seminar educating on today's trends in the catering industry? How does the educator get their pay for their work?

  4. Good questions Zulay.

Individuals can use Second Life for free.

Some corporations, such as IBM, have purchased their own islands on Second Life and developed their own training facility. So, their only costs are purchasing an island and developing the facility.

Virtualis was built by Dan Parks, who is also a meeting planner. He bought an island and created a convention center that he rents out. A tradeshow manager could rent the space and resell the individual booths to exhibitors, just like in the real world.

Crowne Plaza Hotels has online meeting rooms that people can reserve and use at no cost for now.

This is still in it's infancy and it will be interesting to see how it develops.

  5. So would you say that this was created and just in time for the current economic crisis? Helping out with minizing costs for everyone. I think I understand the concept of this now. Thanks Patti.

  6. Wow. That's unbelievable. It's still all mind boggling to me. I love how you can buy islands, and rent out meeting space virtually. I would definitely have to say just in time for the current economic crisis.
